Trailers get worn down over time and eventually will need repairs. While you can't prevent every possible problem, you can engage in proactive maintenance to delay these issues. There are also some easy repairs that owners can handle, saving them a trip to the service department.

The Trailer Bearings
Your trailer's bearings use grease to lubricate rollers in a housing. This grease can get used up over time, which can allow water to enter and cause corrosion. The bearings can then easily overheat and collapse.
To prevent this, inspect the bearings annually. You can also get a bearing replacement kit, allowing you to handle the repair on your own instead of visiting a service department. Signs that the bearings need replacing include noise and heat.
The Trailer Tires
Trailer tires need to be in good condition in order to deliver a smooth towing experience, maintain a desirable fuel efficiency, and avoid a blowout. There are two key proactive maintenance tasks to tackle.
First, regularly check the tire air pressure using a tire pressure gauge. Overinflated and underinflated tires have compromised performance and a greater chance of a blowout. Measure the air pressure, compare it to the manufacturer's recommendations, and adjust accordingly.
Second, check the tire tread depth. Tread helps the tires maintain traction with the road, but it gets worn down naturally over time. Eventually, it gets worn down enough to where it can't offer a safe towing experience. The owner's manual will tell you when the tread is too low and the tires need to be replaced.
The Trailer Suspension
Check the leaf springs regularly. If you notice light between them or notice that they begin to spread, it's time for a replacement. If you commonly travel over difficult terrain, you may want an off-road suspension system that can better handle the route challenge and will get worn down less quickly.
The Trailer Brakes
Trailer brakes will need regular professional maintenance, which will keep them operating well. The brakes and the brake cables will need to be inspected for signs of damage, wear, and fraying.
