Your trailer is rugged and makes any number of jobs much simpler, but hauling it around can be risky. That’s especially true if the weather turns south and you get caught driving in the rain. We here at APC Trailers want to help you get to and from your destination safely, so we’ve put together some tips for towing trailers in the rain below. The Right Gear

It always helps to be prepared, so if you know rain is coming, equipping your trailer with rain tires can make a huge difference. The deeper treads will help you maintain traction even when it’s pouring.

Your tow vehicle’s windshield wipers also need to be in good shape, so make sure to replace them as often as needed. A rain repellant spray on your windshield can also lighten the load on them.

Inspections

Make sure to give the entire setup a good visual inspection before heading out to avoid unnecessary dangers. Check that all lights and signals are working on both your tow vehicle and trailer. Verify that all moving parts are locked into place and that all cargo is securely tied-down. Finally, examine your tires to ensure they’re properly inflated, then that your gas tank is also filled.

Drive Defensively

When you’re on the road, you’ll be best off driving defensively. That means exercising extreme caution, since your trailer is a potential danger to you and everyone around you on the road. Make sure you slow down your driving speed significantly and increase your follow distance to avoid having your trailer affect your momentum too much. Stick to the right lane and try to avoid changing lanes, if possible. When you have to, make sure to signal well in advance.

If you feel your vehicle or trailer slipping or swaying, try to line up with the lane you’re in and apply a steady, slow pressure to your brakes. This will decrease your speed gradually and help you regain control. Never slam on the brakes or swerve sharply, since you’re more likely to lose control and even flip than to prevent an accident. If you don’t think you can stay in control, there’s no shame in simply pulling over onto the shoulder or a parking lot and waiting out the worst of the storm.
